Pensacola Bay System

The Pensacola Bay System includes Pensacola, Escambia, Blackwater and
East bays, the western portion of Santa Rosa Sound, Escambia, Blackwater,
Yellow and Shoal rivers and numerous bayous. These waterways have long
been used for transportation, seafood harvesting, recreational purposes
and, unfortunately, for various types of waste disposal. The total drainage
area covers nearly 7,000 square miles, about 34 percent of which is in
Florida. The entire system discharges into the Gulf of Mexico, primarily
through a narrow pass at the mouth of Pensacola Bay.
