Apalachicola River and Bay System

The Apalachicola is the largest river in the state in terms of flow. Its watershed extends for 21,790 square miles and includes portions of Alabama, Georgia and northwest Florida. Within Florida, the watershed covers 2,400 square miles. The area around it contains the largest forested floodplain in the state, with more reptilian and amphibian species than any other area north of Mexico. Apalachicola Bay, which encompasses 212 square miles, remains one of the most productive estuaries in the United States and supplies 90 percent of Florida’s, and 10 percent of the nation’s, oysters.
