Shoreline Protection and
Restoration
This document provides
guidance to help residents protect water quality, stabilize shorelines,
and provide important habitat through the establishment of waterfront
buffer zones. These are shoreline plantings of shrubs, grasses, and trees
that intercept pollutants from surface runoff and shallow groundwater
before they can reach our bays, streams, or lakes. Buffer zones provide
an environmentally friendly way to protect shorelines from erosion and
provide important habitat for juvenile fish, shellfish, waterfowl, and
other wildlife. They also provide refuges for some of our native coastal
plants. Additionally, many people are discovering that Florida’s native
flora can provide attractive and functional landscaping. This guide includes
information on techniques, appropriate plants, permitting, and related
topics. For more information, please contact Paul Thorpe at (850) 539-5999
