SEDIMENT QUALITY IN THE PENSACOLA BAY SYSTEM
April 2002

By William F. DeBusk, PhD, Irene Poyer, and Iuri Herzfeld, University of Florida
NWFWMD Technical File Report 02-03

This report provides a compilation and collective analysis of estuarine sediment chemistry data collected in the Pensacola Bay System from 1975 through 1998. Sediment data is relevant to the ecological health of the estuary and can be used to infer historical patterns of anthropogenic pollutant loading from the surrounding watershed. Maintaining sediment quality is essential for ensuring suitable habitat for bottom dwelling and bottom-feeding life. Sediments integrate cumulative contaminant inputs from the contributing watershed and may be particularly degraded by long-term pollution.
